01 · The basics

What is a Virtual Power Plant?

A Virtual Power Plant is a network of distributed energy resources — usually home and business batteries — coordinated by an electricity retailer, energy company or specialist provider.

Software combines many small batteries so they can respond like a larger power station or grid-scale battery.

The simple idea:
Thousands of smaller batteries can work together to provide useful energy capacity when the grid needs it.

02 · How it operates

One battery at a time. One coordinated network.

With the customer's permission, a VPP provider can charge, discharge or reserve part of the battery according to agreed contract rules.

01

Generate & store

Solar energy can be used by the home while surplus electricity is stored in the battery.

02

Connect

The compatible battery connects to the VPP provider's energy-management platform.

03

Coordinate

During agreed events, the provider may charge, discharge or reserve part of the battery.

04

Support the grid

Stored electricity may be exported during periods of high demand or high wholesale prices.

Distributed energy

Your battery becomes part of something bigger.

A VPP can coordinate many distributed batteries so they respond together when energy demand and grid conditions change.

03 · Potential benefits

Why do customers join a VPP?

Depending on the provider and contract, VPP participation can offer financial incentives while contributing to a more flexible electricity system.

Joining incentives

Some programs may provide an upfront joining incentive or equipment discount.

$

Ongoing rewards

Customers may receive bill credits, event payments or enhanced export rates depending on the arrangement.

Energy services

Some VPPs provide access to specialised retail plans or energy-management services.

Grid support

Coordinated batteries can help support the wider grid during periods of high demand.

A smarter energy relationship

Your battery can work for your home — and help the grid.

A VPP gives compatible batteries the ability to respond to changing grid conditions. The exact financial benefit, battery control and participation requirements depend on the provider and contract.

Questions to ask →
04 · Know the agreement

How much control does the VPP provider have?

With your permission, the provider may be able to control charging, discharging or battery reserves according to the contract.

When can the provider charge or discharge the battery?
How much minimum reserve remains for the household?
Are payments fixed, event-based or linked to exported energy?
Can you opt out of an event, and are penalties involved?

05 · Important distinction

VPP-capable doesn't mean VPP-enrolled.

A battery can be technically capable of joining a VPP without the owner being required to enrol immediately.

Equipment

VPP-capable

The battery and associated equipment can technically support participation in an eligible VPP program.

06 · Backup power

What happens to your battery during a blackout?

A VPP contract can affect how much energy remains in the battery. Customers who value blackout protection should confirm the minimum state-of-charge reserve, whether the provider can discharge below it and whether backup circuits remain available during a grid outage.
