Australia Energy Guide

Your solar. Your energy. Your export.

Solar feed-in tariffs explained without the jargon. Understand what your exported electricity is worth, how tariffs work and what really matters when comparing electricity plans.

Export credit ¢ / kWh The rate credited for eligible electricity exported to the grid.
Key principle Use first. Self-consumption can be more valuable than exporting.
01 / The basics

What exactly is a feed-in tariff?

A solar feed-in tariff is the rate an electricity retailer pays or credits for eligible excess solar electricity exported from a home or small business to the grid.

It is normally expressed in cents per kilowatt-hour and appears as a credit on your electricity bill.

Your export rate is only one part of the equation. Import electricity prices, daily supply charges, export limits and the way your household uses energy can have a major impact on your overall bill.
02 / Follow the energy

Where does your solar electricity go?

Solar generation can be consumed in the home, stored in a battery or exported to the grid depending on household demand and system configuration.

Solar generation

Panels produce electricity during daylight hours.

Home consumption

Electricity can directly power appliances and household loads.

+

Battery storage

Compatible batteries can store energy for later use.

Grid export

Eligible excess electricity can be exported for a credit.

03 / Know the structure

Four ways feed-in tariffs can work.

Retailers can structure export credits differently. The headline cents-per-kWh figure doesn't tell the whole story.

01
Single-rate
One export rate applies during all eligible periods.
02
Time-varying
Export rates change according to the time of day.
03
Block tariff
Different rates apply to different quantities of exported energy.
04
Premium / legacy
Older arrangements may offer higher rates but strict eligibility or expiry conditions.
04 / Look beyond the headline

The highest feed-in tariff isn't always the best deal.

A retailer can offer an attractive export rate while charging more elsewhere. What matters is the total annual cost of your electricity plan.

  • Higher electricity import rates
  • Higher daily supply charges
  • Export caps or thresholds
  • Special eligibility requirements
  • Different rates at different times
  • VPP or battery participation conditions
05 / What changes the outcome?

Your export income isn't just about your tariff.

Your system design, household behaviour, battery strategy and electricity plan all influence the result.

01

Solar system size

System size, orientation and shading affect how much electricity is generated.

02

Daytime electricity use

Appliances operating during daylight can increase self-consumption.

03

Network export limits

Export limits and dynamic controls can restrict how much energy reaches the grid.

04

Battery strategy

Charging and discharge behaviour affects when solar energy is consumed or exported.

05

Retailer plan

Export rates, import prices, caps and eligibility conditions vary between plans.

06

Seasonal weather

Solar generation changes throughout the year with weather, daylight and household occupancy.

06 / Compare the whole plan

Don't compare one number. Compare the bill.

The right comparison is the estimated annual bill based on your household's actual import and export behaviour.

Looking only at the feed-in tariff

  • Export rate The headline cents-per-kWh figure.
  • High export rate May look attractive at first glance.
  • Limited picture Doesn't account for the rest of your electricity bill.

Looking at the whole plan

  • Import rate What you pay when buying electricity.
  • Supply charge The ongoing daily cost of the plan.
  • Export conditions Caps, thresholds and eligibility.
  • Household profile When and how much energy you use.

07 / Questions

Feed-in tariffs, answered.

Retailer rates, government programs and eligibility conditions can change. Always confirm current terms before making an investment decision.

Usually no. Retailer rates and regulated minimums can change, and legacy schemes have separate expiry rules.
Some retailer plans offer time-varying export rates and compatible batteries may export later in the day. The benefit depends on battery losses, import prices, VPP rules and export limits.
Not necessarily. Network export limits and low midday export prices can reduce the value of additional generation unless the energy is used on site or stored.
Not necessarily. Compare the estimated total annual bill using your actual imports, exports, timing, supply charges, export caps and other plan conditions.
